Dr. James H. Berry, DO, DFASAM, is Professor and Chair of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry at West Virginia University’s Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI). A specialist in Addiction Psychiatry, he has spent the past two decades confronting the “diseases of despair” in Appalachia as a clinician, educator, researcher, and advocate.
Dr. Berry’s research advances novel neuromodulation approaches to substance use disorders, including the nation’s first trials of Deep Brain Stimulation and Low Intensity Focused Ultrasound for opioid use disorder. He is the founding executive director of the RNI PRISM Center (Practice, Research, and Integration of Spirituality in Medicine) and chairs the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) Addiction Psychiatry Board Examination Committee.
A committed advocate for people living with mental illness and addiction, Dr. Berry has spoken before audiences ranging from local town halls to the United States Senate, where he has testified.
